While education for their children is a priority among Afghan citizens, the government of Afghanistan faces daunting challenges in education that are rarely the subject of reports from Kabul or Washington. Afghanistan has been at war continuously for thirty years; each phase of war has presented new political problems to Afghan educators. As the US reviews policy in Afghanistan, it is important to re-examine our assistance to education and correct discrepancies between assertions of progress and realities on the ground. Former Teachers College Professor Jo Shepherd describes the enlightening experience of working alongside Afghan educators to restore and improve education in this war-torn country..
